Matthew 4
Note how the story in Matthew 4 begins: Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for his temptation. His wilderness experience isn’t a punishment for wrongdoing or the unhappy consequence of a mistake; he was led by the Spirit into this time of preparation through deprivation. The wilderness lays bear our desires so that they can be purified. As his stomach growls with hunger, Jesus affirms the lesson learned through fasting and contemplative prayer the wilderness: the only thing that truly satisfies and gives life is the word of God. Anything else we desire and pursue will ultimately leave us starving for more.
